This Is What It Looks Like When Textured Hair Takes Up Space

The Textured Hair Industry Just Had Its Moment

12th July 2026 — Home House, Marylebone

On a warm Sunday afternoon in Marylebone, something quietly significant happened.

A room full of beauty founders, creators and industry voices at the heart of the UK textured hair and skin community gathered under one roof and spoke honestly about their hair. About the products that failed them. The questions that exhausted them. The industry that, for too long, simply wasn't built with them in mind.

That room was An Afternoon with ODARA. And by the time the music started and the last of the bubbles were poured, it felt less like an event and more like a beginning.

A Welcome That Set the Tone

ODARA founder Alexandria opened with a question that hung in the air long after she'd asked it.

"When was the last time you walked into a beauty space and felt like it had been built with you at the centre?"

For most people in the room, the honest answer was the same: not often enough.

Alexandria shared the story behind ODARA, how years of navigating the beauty industry as someone with textured hair revealed a gap that went far deeper than product availability. The real gap was knowledge. Understanding. Guidance. Knowing not just what to buy, but why. That question became ODARA.

Named from the Yoruba word meaning something beautiful, something good, ODARA is a discovery platform, curating exceptional niche and emerging brands rooted in African and Caribbean heritage, and introducing them to customers who have spent years settling for less. At the heart of that mission is SOURCED by ODARA, a brand discovery programme bringing extraordinary founder-led brands to market with the education and context people need to buy with confidence.

"We don't just stock. We curate. We don't just sell. We educate. We don't just follow trends. We discover what's next."

Hair Stories: The Moments That Stayed With Us

What followed was the most quietly powerful part of the afternoon — personal hair stories that reminded every person in the room why this work matters.

Emily moved to Nigeria at twelve, relaxed her hair, and watched it break. She turned to wigs, until colleagues started commenting every time she switched styles: wow, your hair grows so quickly. Eventually she wore the exact same wig every day just to avoid the questions. ODARA, she said, changed that. A curated selection of quality products meant she no longer had to guess on how to care for her hair.

Oluchi, a UK-based aesthetician and content creator, spoke about arriving from Nigeria and navigating a new country, including caring for her daughter's hair. Her daughter's hair has grown and is thriving. Being able to order quality products directly to her door through ODARA has made that journey easier than she ever expected.

Dr. Nanayaa, founder of Ayewa Labs in Ghana, brought the announcement of the afternoon. Her contract manufacturing company produces products for brands globally, and she announced a new partnership with ODARA that will open a direct route for emerging brands to enter the UK textured hair and skin market. For brands with extraordinary products and no established distribution channel, this changes everything.

Beauty Court, Founder Stories and a Room That Didn't Want to Leave

Midway through, Alexandria introduced Beauty Court, putting the beauty industry's biggest claims on trial. Guilty if false. Not guilty if true. The room loved every second of it.

The afternoon closed with two founder stories. Temilola Sule of Detanggle Duette built a detangling brush born from her own frustration with textured hair, and discovered it worked for all hair types. Louise of Graceful Essence cut off all her hair during a BPD episode and, unable to find products she trusted, made her own. Every formulation is natural. Every product carries the weight of that journey.

By the time the bowl food arrived and the music started, connections were forming in real time, between founders and creators, press and brands, people who had spent years in adjacent spaces without ever being in the same room. The afternoon ended with dancing, laughter, and the kind of warmth that doesn't happen by accident.

"A lot of people were meeting for the first time, but the room felt like we had all known each other for years."

That is what ODARA is building. Not just a place to shop. A place to belong.

The textured hair industry just had its moment. And ODARA was in the room where it happened.
